Artist Statement

Working mainly with photography Sadie Brown creates photographs that capture people’s vulnerabilities. Currently, she is interested in shining a light on the overwhelming power of grief and how strongly it can impact an individual, both emotionally and physically. In her work, she aims to affect the viewer emotionally by connecting with memories they may have of feeling alone. Her personal relationship with grief allows her to connect with her audience’s emotions, knowing first hand how alone it can feel.

After losing her father she started to notice how uncomfortable people feel around someone who is grieving. By recreating memories from when she was processing grief and felt truly alone she tries to resonate with her audience and start a conversation about grief - hoping to demonstrate the haunting impact it can have on an individual. People treat those grieving too delicately, which can cause them to feel as if they don’t have anyone they can talk to. After losing a loved one memories start to blur and time feels obsolete, a simple encounter can cause someone to retrace their past trauma reopening the grieving process. She creates work to show her audiences how constantly these memories can replay in someone's mind - the times when they felt broken, lost and unable to comprehend what was happening. Her intention is to capture the blurriness when someone loses a loved one and the never-ending feeling that moment carries.
